Tudor - Elizabethan Velveteen Flat Cap with Pearls - Renaissance

Our pearled version of a flat cap is made of velveteen and has individually knotted freshwater pearls scattered on the top. It is fully lined and carries the Palace Gallery - Fine Accessories label.

Popular in Tudor and Elizabethan England, this style of hat was worn by men, women and children. Period painting and extant examples show that the brim was much smaller than most Ren Faire offerings. This one has a diameter of 10 1/2" with a brim that is approx. 1 1/2" on the medium size hat. The brim is stiffened with buckram and will vary about 1/8" as the sizes go up or down (Small 1 5/8" - Large 1 3/8" and XL 1 1/4").

Black, Burgundy, Navy

HISTORY: Wear one or pay the fine! Queen Elizabeth passed a royal decree in the 16th century that all adults and children over the age of 7 MUST wear a flat cap on Sunday and holidays or be fined. Mary Queen of Scots had her portrait painted in 1565 while wearing one embellished with pearls. The last pic is a period painting showing a man wearing a pearled flat cap during the 16th century.
