Knight's Paternoster - Rosary - Tenner - Psalter 15th c. Prayer Beads

Five stones represent the various aspects of a knight's life:
1. Light Stone (14mm Italian marble) - Represents unpredictable death.
2. Multicolored Stone (15mm brown jasper) - Signifies Manifold sins
3. Red Stone (16mm coral) - The Last Judgement
4. Black Stone (16mm agate) - Represents Hell
5. Golden Stone (22x8mm - Copal Amber) - Represents the glory and joy of the saints.

The stones used is our interpretation of the colors indicated in the handbook (see HISTORY below). We have also added 8mm copal amber beads between each large stone so that the chain of beads is actually a Tenner. We have added a small credo cross to the tassel for saying the Apostle's Creed. It measures approx. 11" overall (excluding the hanging cord).

Shipped in a velvet pouch.
A FREE Latin prayer booklet is included with each rosary purchase.

HISTORY: The description of this rosary can be found in Exemplum 10 from the 1483 edition of the rosary handbook, Vnser lieven frauen Psalter (Our Lady's Psalter). fols. G3v-G4r, published in Ulm, Germany by Conrad Dinckmut. There is some speculation that the original description was meant for the 5 paternosters in a full size rosary; however, we decided a tenner would be easier for a knight to fasten to his belt and a quicker way to say his prayers.

Tenners or Gebetskette Zehners (prayer chain with 10 beads) became popular in the 16th century. As the name implies, they were chaplets consisting of 10 beads. Sometimes another bead was added which was usually larger than the 10 beads and sometimes had bead caps and/or spacers separating it from the other beads. In addition to these beads there was a tassel, saint's metal, credo cross, crucifix or some kind of pendant. Often a number of these items were used in combination at the end of the prayer beads.

AMBER is the oldest substance for human adornment and one of the most popular substances used for paternosters during the Renaissance. (Copal amber is Young Amber in an intermediate stage of polymerization. In other words, it is unfossilized.) Believed to contain solar energies, offers luck, healing, strength and protection to the wearer.
