This Hunter's Cap has many names. One of the most popular is a Robin Hood hat. It was worn for at least 3 centuries without changing a great deal because it was a functional cap worn by hunters and travelers. In period it was called a "bycocket" from the French words "bec cocquet" meaning bird's beak or cock's beak. I've seen paintings where it is worn with cotehardies and with houpelunds. Women also wore them with gorgets when going on "the hunt" with the men.
We call it the period baseball cap because it can be worn with the bill towards the front or facing behind. There are many paintings with the brim turned one way or another. The brim shaded the eyes on a sunny day and when worn backwards on a rainy day, it kept the rain off the neck. A very practical design!
