Peru Pre-Columbian Cat Earrings - 250 B.C. to 125 A.D. - Oculate Myth

A pair of Paracas "Cat" earring pendants measuring approx. 3/4" These are attached ear wires that have a 4mm jasper bead. Overall length is approx. 1 1/2".

This jewelry, from the south coast of Peru, is based on a detail from an ovoid (egg shaped) vase depicting the Paracas mythological Oculate Being. This creature was a composite image with fox, feline, killer whale, and bird attributes. Paracas potters were more interested in the decoration of the ceramic surfaces than in the sculptural form. Incised lines were often filled with brightly colored resins in a post-fired application.

HISTORY: Before the Spanish conquest, many Pre-Columbian cultures flourished in South and Central America. Their close relationship to nature is echoed in the style of personal adornments which were often worn as protection against hostile forces or made as offerings to appease their gods.

Native American - Bobcat/Lynx/Wildcat- Prey God of the South. Elusive and intelligent, a solitary and independent hunter, believed to be helpful when hunting antelope because of a special predator/prey relationship. Bobcat is thought of as the older brother to wolf and the younger brother of mountain lion. Bobcat is the hunting animal of the South and is used by the Zuni when hunting antelope. Bobcat also represents clairvoyance and is a secret keeper.

Mountain Lion- "Directional Guardian and Prey God of the North. The mountain lion spirit is associated with personal power and resourcefulness, independence, leadership, spiritual intensity, intuition, fierce protectiveness and loyalty." Mountain lion is carried by travelers to protect them on their journey and also carried by hunters to help ensure a successful hunt.

Your purchase of these pieces helps support the museum community and independent jewelers dedicated to duplicating the workmanship of craftsmen from the past.
