Vintage Equality of Rights Sterling Silver Lawyers Ring Latin

$75.00

Shipping to United States: $8.00

A vintage Lawyer's Ring with a contoured band (6mm or 1/4" wide) Inscribed in Latin: Aequalitas, meaning 'equality of rights'.

The concept of equality of rights we tend to think of as a modern idea, whatever the particular struggle being pursued. However, the battle to establish freedoms, rights and equality is as ancient as civilization itself. The Latin word ‘aequalitas’ was a rallying call in ancient Rome; in French, 'egalite' was one of the cries of the Revolution; in English, equality was a central tenet of the American Declaration of Independence. There are many words for equality in Latin, with differing shades of meaning. ‘Aequalitas’ specifically refers to equality of rights.

These rings are cast in 925 sterling silver using the lost-wax method and are hand finished in the USA.

LAWYERS RING HISTORY: The tradition of giving Serjeants-at-Law or Lawyers' rings upon admittance to the bar began in England sometime during the Plantagent period in the early 1400's. The rings were simple bands inscribed around the outside or inside with a legal verse in Latin sometimes referring to a contemporary event but more usually engraved with a verse referring to a legal ideal. The custom is referred to in the "De Laudibus Legum Angliac." The original of this ring would have been used for such a purpose.

Care Instructions:
Sterling silver will retain its luster for years and frequent wearing of your jewelry will help prevent tarnishing. We recommend polishing your sterling silver jewelry with a dry silver polishing cloth available at most grocery or hardware stores. We do not recommend polishing with silver polish as this may remove the antiquing. When you are not wearing your jewelry, storing your silver in a jewelry bag will help prevent tarnishing.

Your purchase of these pieces helps support the museum community and independent jewelers dedicated to duplicating the workmanship of craftsmen from the past.
