This paternoster is called a New World rosary because it appears to be made of turquoise which was a popular stone in the Americas during the exploration of the New World during the 16th Century.
It is made of 12mm round beads, a small equal arm credo cross, an 18x14mm skull; all are joined together with jewelry wire links. These beads were sold to me as turquoise many years ago so I believe they are stabilized and dyed; however, they may be dyed magnesite. I'm not positive they are really turquoise that's why they are offered at this price.
It ends with a black tassel and measures approx. 11 1/2" including the black tassel and the ring with cord for tying on a belt.
Tenners or Gebetskette Zehners (prayer chain with 10 beads) became popular in the 16th century. As the name implies, they were chaplets consisting of 10 beads. Sometimes another bead was added which was usually larger than the 10 beads and sometimes had bead caps and/or spacers separating it from the other beads. In addition to these beads there was a tassel, saint's metal, credo cross, crucifix or some kind of pendant. Often a number of these items were used in combination at the end of the prayer beads.
Memento Mori jewelry, including rosaries, with its unflinching use of symbols of death and its purposeful message "Remember you must die" was widely worn in Western Europe during the sixteenth century. It was a reminder that life is temporary and heaven should be the ultimate goal, with the intention to encourage virtuous living. There is one extant skull rosary that came from Mexico during that time period and others that date back as early as 1250. Both of these rosaries have been reproduced in the Rosaries & Paternoster section.
