Celtic Cockade for Tricorn or Bicorne - Society of United Irishmen - Claddagh

Be Wearing the Green! This cockade is made of 7/8" grosgrain ribbon with a Claddagh center shank button which is approx. 3/4" in diameter. The button is held on with a cotter pin so that it is easy to remove and replace with a military button or another symbol of your choice, if desired.

This button is available on other colors of ribbon, too!

The cockade is approx. 4" in diameter and has a felt backing. There is a bar pin on the back for attaching it to clothing, an arm band or cloth hat. CAUTION: The pin will not go through a felt hat without bending and possibly breaking. Please stitch your felt hat side up with thread or a thin ribbon and then attach the pin to the stitching. If you have one of our laced tricorn hats, just slide the bar pin through the "x" side laces.

IRISH HISTORY - A green flag was used in the Great Irish Rebellion in the 17th century. The color popped up again in the 1790's effort to bring republican politics to Ireland. A police report from that time period described the uniform of the Society of United Irishmen, as dark a green coat, green and white striped trousers and a felt hat with a GREEN COCKADE!

HISTORY: The Claddagh symbol shows a crown above two hands clasping a heart in the middle. It is an ancient Gaelic symbol which is now a universal symbol of lasting love, eternal friendship, and loyalty. It was first designed around 400 years ago in a small village near Galway, Ireland. The Claddagh is often placed on wedding bands to represent holding a lover’s heart in one’s hands.

Claddagh Symbolism
The crown represents loyalty. The hands represents friendship. The heart symbolizes love.
