Two cockades in one! An American black cockade with a white small cockade center (showing their alliance with France) held together with a 1" (25mm) metal anchor button. This is one of our largest cockade which measures approx. 4 1/2" across.
There is a bar pin on the back for attaching to cloth hats and clothing. Warning! The pin is not strong enough to go through heavy felt without bending and/or breaking.

HISTORY: Continental Marines (1775-1783) aka "Colonial Marines", predecessor to the USMC, during the American Revolution
American Colonial Marines were the maritime-militiamen who served in Benedict Arnold's flotilla, George Washington's Marblehead Regiment, and the state navies against the British Army occupation during the American Revolutionary War.
HISTORY: In 1780, the military cockade system was changed from the officer's colors (red, gold and green) to black with a white center. France had entered the war against Britain in 1778 and France’s cockade was white. Thus, as a symbol of the two nations’ alliance, George Washington established that the American cockade would be an Alliance Cockade – black with a white center. Many of the French troops likewise wore an Alliance Cockade of white with a black center.
